Forex signals and copy trading: how they work and what you risk

Signals and copy trading both outsource your entry and exit decisions, but neither removes the risk of losing money.

Signals tell you what to trade; copy trading places the trade for you

A forex signal is a recommendation to buy or sell a currency pair at a stated time, often with an entry price, a stop loss and a target. You still open the trade yourself in your own broker account, so the size, the timing and the decision to follow remain yours. Copy trading goes further: you connect your account to another trader's account, and their positions are mirrored in yours automatically, usually in proportion to your balance.

The appeal is obvious. Most people working South African hours cannot watch the London session from 10:00 to 19:00 SAST, let alone the New York session that runs to midnight. A signal service or a copied trader appears to solve that problem by acting while you are at work or asleep.

The catch is that a signal is only an opinion, and a copied trader is only a person with a track record. Neither has any obligation to your capital, and neither shares your losses.

Copy trading South Africa: the mechanics you are agreeing to

When you copy a trader, your account mirrors theirs on a ratio you set, so a trader risking a large share of their own equity can produce a much larger swing in yours than you expected. Check how the platform handles position sizing, whether you can set a maximum loss per trade, and how quickly you can stop copying. Those settings live in the platform, not in the marketing page.

Currency matters here. Your account is funded in rand, while most copied trades are denominated in a foreign currency, so the ZAR exchange rate moves your result as well as the trade itself. A position that ends flat in dollars can still be a loss or a gain in rands.

Withdrawals usually arrive by EFT, instant EFT, Ozow, Capitec Pay, card or bank transfer, depending on the provider. Confirm the withdrawal method and the processing time on the broker's own funding page before you deposit, because that is where the terms are stated.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Verify it twice, once in the app and once on the funding page, and never withdraw to an account that did not fund you.

The FSCA position on signals, copy trading and leveraged FX

A firm offering leveraged foreign exchange to South African residents needs an ODP licence from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority. You can check any provider on the FSCA list of authorised financial services providers at fsca.co.za, using the FSP number the firm quotes. If a provider cannot point you to a number on that register, treat the offer as unverified.

Signal sellers sit in a greyer area. Many are not licensed to give advice on South African financial products, and a paid Telegram or WhatsApp group is not a substitute for a licensed financial services provider. Ask what licence the sender holds and who regulates them before you pay for anything.

Free trading signals deserve the same scrutiny as paid ones. A free channel is often a funnel towards a broker, an affiliate link or a paid tier, and the person posting may be paid per sign-up rather than per result. Free is not the same as independent.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search by the registered company in the footer rather than the name on the homepage.

The risks that do not appear in the performance screenshots

Past results from a signal provider or a copied trader tell you what happened, not what will happen. A track record can be short, selectively shown, or produced during a trending market that flatters a particular style. You cannot verify the trades behind a screenshot, and you cannot recover money lost following a call.

Copy trading also concentrates risk. If the trader you follow holds several positions in the same direction, your account carries that same exposure, and a single adverse move hits everything at once. Leverage magnifies the outcome in both directions.

There is no compensation scheme for trading losses in South Africa. If a provider turns out to be unlicensed or disappears with your deposit, the FSCA register is your starting point for a complaint, but it cannot return money you chose to send. Keep your deposits to an amount you can afford to lose entirely.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. App stores list software. Registers list permissions - and that is the one that matters.

Where signal providers sit in the FSCA licensing picture

A signal service that only publishes trade ideas is generally not providing financial advice in the regulated sense, so many operate without an FSCA licence. That absence is not automatically unlawful, but it removes the consumer protections you would otherwise have. Check the FSCA list of authorised financial services providers at fsca.co.za before treating any provider as accountable to a regulator.

The distinction readers get wrong is between information and advice. A provider that tells you what to buy, when to exit, and how much to risk has crossed into advice, and advice requires authorisation. If the same provider also holds your funds or places orders, the licensing question becomes sharper still.

Practical consequence: if a South African provider is unlicensed and you have a dispute, the FSCA cannot intervene on your behalf in the same way. Your remedy is a civil claim against a party you may not be able to locate. Ask for the licence category in writing before paying anything.

Undated figures are opinions in disguise. What we could not trace back to a source was dropped rather than guessed at.

How the money actually leaves your account when you subscribe

Most South African subscribers pay by EFT or instant EFT, with Ozow, Capitec Pay, card and ordinary bank transfer also appearing at checkout. The rail matters because debit orders and card charges can be reversed through your bank, while a manual EFT is a payment you authorised and generally cannot claw back once it clears.

Order of operations matters here. Confirm the beneficiary name against the provider's own registered details, not the name in a social media profile. If the account is held in a person's name rather than a business, treat that as a warning sign and verify before sending.

Recurring subscriptions are the common failure mode. A monthly EFT that you forget to cancel is money gone, and providers rarely remind you. Diarise the renewal date in your banking app and check the broker's own funding page for anything the signal provider claims about deposits.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address - municipal bill or bank statement; requirements differ per firm. The firm's own sign-up page is the list that counts.

The lag between a signal and your fill is where results diverge

Signals are broadcast to many subscribers at once. By the time you read the message, open the platform, size the trade and confirm it, the price has moved. The provider's posted result reflects their entry, not yours, and the gap is usually against you rather than in your favour.

This is not a minor technicality. On short holding periods a small adverse move can turn a posted winner into a loser for the follower, and no performance screenshot captures it. The longer the subscriber list, the wider the likely slippage.

Copy trading removes the manual delay but introduces its own version. Your account may be too small to mirror the copied position proportionally, so the trade is scaled or skipped entirely. Read how the platform handles scaling before assuming your results will track the trader's.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. That spread between the market rate and the broker's own is a cost worth counting.

Deciding what to verify before you commit any money

Work in a fixed order. First, confirm the provider's regulatory status on the FSCA list. Second, read the broker's own funding page for how deposits and withdrawals are handled. Third, check the platform's terms on how copy trades are sized and closed. Only then consider whether the strategy suits you.

South African readers should also confirm the timezone assumption. Signals timestamped in another zone can arrive while you are asleep, and a stop-loss you cannot adjust overnight is a real exposure. SAST is UTC+2, so compare that against the provider's stated schedule.

If any step cannot be completed, stop. A provider that will not name its regulator, will not show its funding terms, or will not explain position sizing has given you the answer. No performance record substitutes for those three checks.
